Do you know what’s inside your Shampoo & Conditioner?
Do you know the long term effects it may have on your body?
Victoria&K reveal the truth behind the leading industry brands
While the health conscious person is careful about the food they eat and having enough exercise to stay fit and healthy, it’s also important to think about what we are using on our bodies also. It’s said to only take 27 seconds for the chemicals in cosmetics to be absorbed into the blood stream. You will also be surprised to know that the cosmetic industry are not required by law to test the effects of using their ingredients on the body. The truth is that although people are aware that certain chemicals which are used throughout the industry are cancer causing, there is still lot of chemicals that are being used which we don’t know what the long term effects are.
Victoria&K are always looking for Natural and Organic alternatives that we can use on a daily basis to replace the traditional cosmetics that fill the shop shelves, and so we have developed a Shampoo which uses as much natural ingredients as possible to replace the need for Parabens and SLS / SLES chemicals.
So what exactly are Parabens and SLS chemicals used in shampoo and conditioners for?
We can safely say that it would be better for everyone to avoid parabens -at least until we have more conclusive documentation about the long term effects of parabens on the body.
Parabens are used to prevent the growth of microbes in your products. In other words, they have nothing really to do with cleaning your hair or scalp. They are used to extend the shelf life of shampoos and conditioners.
Alarmingly though, parabens have been discovered in quite high concentrations inside breast tumours.
In this UK study, titled ‘Concentrations of Parabens In Human Breast Tumours’ from the Journal of Applied Toxicology, it explains that parabens appear to congregate in fatty tissues in the body, such as breast tissue and that they are guilty of “disrupting cellular function.”
Their “oestrogenic activity”, the study continues to detail, “could potentially influence both the incidence and treatment of breast cancer.”
So that’s parabens out then.
Shockingly, though, they are still present in a huge number of popular cosmetics products. And even though they might be at low-level concentrations, if you use all your favourite paraben-containing products at once, you could be causing a build up of these harmful ingredients in your body.
The chatter around Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALS) is a little less clear.
These sulfate compounds are a cheap, but heavy duty detergent, found in absolutely loads of our favourite haircare products.
There have been reports of a similar link to cancer – BUT there is NO substantial, proven premise for this link. And this conclusion has been backed by heavyweights such as the American Cancer Council.
So you needn’t be as wary of them as you are of parabens, that’s for sure.
However, they aren’t without their negative qualities.
As strong detergents, they are used in shampoos to create a lather and to thoroughly clean the hair, but mostly they are way more powerful than they need to be.
Our hair is designed to have some natural oils in it. Scalps that have been exposed to really strong detergents can become irritated and unhappy.
So that itchiness that you thought was dandruff? Yeah, it might actually be that your poor head is inflamed from the sulfates in your shampoo.
Even worse, these sulfates can strip your hair of all of its natural moisture – plus, of course, any added moisture you’ve been trying to give it by way of deep conditioning treatments.
So for those of you with dry, damaged, brittle or over-dyed hair, you might want to think about steering well clear of these harsh detergents.
If you haven’t heard already, it’s now just days before Victoria&K will be launching their very own Paraben and SLS free Argan oil shampoo and conditioner. Available at http://www.victoriaandk.com/shop/ from the 28th Febuary.
