How to spot an organic faker on cosmetics
People are becoming more and more aware about what cosmetics they are using and the organic cosmetic sector in the UK grew in 2015 by 22% a much larger percentage than the organic food sector!
By why should we be worried about our cosmetics? Well, our skin is the largest organ we have and we need to look after it. It takes less than 30 seconds for a cosmetic product to be absorbed by the skin and as more studies reveal the long term effects of using chemical components found in mainstream cosmetics have not been fully investigated.
Parabens, which is a cheap chemical used to promote shelf life in cosmetics have been found abundant in cancer tumours and SLS which is again a very cheap ingredient used to give foaming and cleansing agent is too harsh, causing very dry skin and problematic scalps.
Certified Organic food and cosmetics make sure that the ingredients used in products are natural and have not been treated with any GMOS, preservatives, and have been produced ecologically by sound means.
How to spot a genuine Organic product
Look at the packaging. Don’t be fooled by smart brand names such as Organix or Dr Organic. Word play is a vital marketing tool for branding a product. However it is not confirmation that the product is certified Organic.
Check the labelling. Does is have an Organic certified seal? Such as a Soil Association stamp for UK or USDA for the USA.
Check the ingredients.
If it doesn’t say organic anywhere else on the packaging than it won’t be. Also when it comes to cosmetics, there is a little bit of science involved. It can be sometimes impossible to find an ingredient in an organic form. In this case where non – organic ingredients are used the labelling should say the percentage of organic ingredients.
Soil Association will not certify a product Organic unless it is more than 70% Organic.
“If a product uses between 70-95% organic agro-ingredients then we will certify it, though we will not allow it claim to be organic. In this case it can state that it is made with ‘xx% organic ingredients’”
Quoted from the Soil Association website
What does it mean when certified Organic COSMOS ?
The producer has had its manufacturing facility inspected annually by the Soil Association or another certifying body. This includes an audit of the organic ingredients used and a demonstration of ecologically sound production methods
All product formulae and labels have been approved
It will be clearly labelled so that you can make an informed choice about the product you are buying
Any non-organic ingredients are being used because no organic equivalents were available.
All ingredients are GM free – non-organic ingredients can only be used if their suppliers has submitted a declaration that it is non-GM
It has used minimal non-organic additives and only those from a restricted list. These must be non-GM and can only be used if the organic version of that ingredient is not yet available.
Any processed ingredients, are processed by ecologically sound means.

So when buying your cosmetic products: Look for the logo and look for the ingredients or percentage.
I found this great little video on You Tube. It explains why Victoria&K are committed to provide the best Natural & Organic Cosmetics WITHOUT the harsh chemicals. Remember folks it takes less than 30 seconds for cosmetics to be absorbed into our blood stream. This is the real reason we need to take care of what we using on our bodies.
Do you know what’s inside your Shampoo & Conditioner?
Do you know the long term effects it may have on your body?
Victoria&K reveal the truth behind the leading industry brands
While the health conscious person is careful about the food they eat and having enough exercise to stay fit and healthy, it’s also important to think about what we are using on our bodies also. It’s said to only take 27 seconds for the chemicals in cosmetics to be absorbed into the blood stream. You will also be surprised to know that the cosmetic industry are not required by law to test the effects of using their ingredients on the body. The truth is that although people are aware that certain chemicals which are used throughout the industry are cancer causing, there is still lot of chemicals that are being used which we don’t know what the long term effects are.
Victoria&K are always looking for Natural and Organic alternatives that we can use on a daily basis to replace the traditional cosmetics that fill the shop shelves, and so we have developed a Shampoo which uses as much natural ingredients as possible to replace the need for Parabens and SLS / SLES chemicals.
So what exactly are Parabens and SLS chemicals used in shampoo and conditioners for?
We can safely say that it would be better for everyone to avoid parabens -at least until we have more conclusive documentation about the long term effects of parabens on the body.
Parabens are used to prevent the growth of microbes in your products. In other words, they have nothing really to do with cleaning your hair or scalp. They are used to extend the shelf life of shampoos and conditioners.
Alarmingly though, parabens have been discovered in quite high concentrations inside breast tumours.
In this UK study, titled ‘Concentrations of Parabens In Human Breast Tumours’ from the Journal of Applied Toxicology, it explains that parabens appear to congregate in fatty tissues in the body, such as breast tissue and that they are guilty of “disrupting cellular function.”
Their “oestrogenic activity”, the study continues to detail, “could potentially influence both the incidence and treatment of breast cancer.”
So that’s parabens out then.
Shockingly, though, they are still present in a huge number of popular cosmetics products. And even though they might be at low-level concentrations, if you use all your favourite paraben-containing products at once, you could be causing a build up of these harmful ingredients in your body.
The chatter around Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALS) is a little less clear.
These sulfate compounds are a cheap, but heavy duty detergent, found in absolutely loads of our favourite haircare products.
There have been reports of a similar link to cancer – BUT there is NO substantial, proven premise for this link. And this conclusion has been backed by heavyweights such as the American Cancer Council.
So you needn’t be as wary of them as you are of parabens, that’s for sure.
However, they aren’t without their negative qualities.
As strong detergents, they are used in shampoos to create a lather and to thoroughly clean the hair, but mostly they are way more powerful than they need to be.
Our hair is designed to have some natural oils in it. Scalps that have been exposed to really strong detergents can become irritated and unhappy.
So that itchiness that you thought was dandruff? Yeah, it might actually be that your poor head is inflamed from the sulfates in your shampoo.
Even worse, these sulfates can strip your hair of all of its natural moisture – plus, of course, any added moisture you’ve been trying to give it by way of deep conditioning treatments.
So for those of you with dry, damaged, brittle or over-dyed hair, you might want to think about steering well clear of these harsh detergents.
If you haven’t heard already, it’s now just days before Victoria&K will be launching their very own Paraben and SLS free Argan oil shampoo and conditioner. Available at http://www.victoriaandk.com/shop/ from the 28th Febuary.
Can Pure Argan oil Provide Fair Trade for all?
Argan oil is now becoming a household name, especially with the likes of top cosmetic brands such as Loreal, Garnier, Pantene and tresemme now offering countless products containing Argan oil on our supermarket shelves. And lets not forget our Isreal brothers that were the first in 2005 to launch the first Argan oil product in the UK market called, Moroccanoil. Exclusive to hairdressers, the brand have been the leaders in opening the floodgates to the world, and have now expanded and launched their own skin product range containing Argan oil.
Its hard to imagine how Morocco is managing to keep up with the western demand and produce the amount of Argan oil needed to supply all these companies. Lets also not forget the smaller businesses, like Victoria&K, who have a close connection to Morocco and feel passionately about Argan oil in its true pure and 100% Organic form. Quite simply, it cant.
In 2012 Morocco exported 700 tons of Argan oil, however it only has the capability of producing half of that number. The work of the women cooperatives quite simply cannot keep up with demand if they where only extracting the oil by hand.
On estimate, if Argan oil was produced A-Z by hand, this is the process:
The women collect the harvest from the Argan forest, without the use of machines, just the help of village donkey which helps to carry the load. They then have to walk, or transport the harvest by truck, to the weekly market.
The harvest is then sold, either bought by cooperatives or privately run businesses. The price of the harvest is only worth what the companies will pay, so if there is a good harvest, they will pay less for the Argan. If he harvest has been bad and there is a high demand for the Argan they will pay more.
Once the harvest has reached its destination, the women now have the laborious task of cracking each nut and exposing the 2 – 3 seeds which are held inside. As our feature picture shows, the women are sitting on the floor, with stones to help them crack the hard shells.
The actual quantities are roughly 20 – 30 kilos of shells will give you aprox 1 kilo of seed/ 500ml of oil.
The seed is either cold pressed (for cosmetic) or heated slightly for culinary use.
The women press the oil by hand by using traditional methods, grinding the seed in the mill as pictured below.
All in all to press 1 litre of of Argan oil will take 1 woman a week of hard manual work. So what about the womens wage? Surly all this hard work will benefit them, by giving them enough money to send their children to a better school? or to pay for medication needed for a loved one?
Victoria&K feel deeply that these women should not be exploited for the gain of the rich Moroccans and Europeans that own the cooperatives.
Companies that sell Pure Argan oil to the western market should not ‘cash in’ by selling the idea that their Argan oil is produced by hand, when this is likely to be a front, and the oil is actually pressed by machine.
Cooperatives should be doing what they are set up to do, Providing an equal share of the profits to the women working in the cooperatives, and provide schooling to the women and their children. And importantly offering an insight to the traditional ways of the Amazigh people, and keeping them alive.
With Victoria&K’s close connections to Morocco, we will be striving to make sure the these women do not have to work like this, We will be going to the remote villages and paying the women directly for their harvest, a fair price without them having to walk or travel to the market, or to sit for long periods of time cracking the seed or working the mill.
Victoria&K have never claimed that their oil is hand made, and to ensure to our customers that our our oil is 100% extra virgin Pure Argan oil we will be pressing the oil ourselves at our UK headquarters.

Absolutely! And to prove this there are tons of products for your hair at the moment containing Argan oil. If you look in your local supermarket, you will find at least 5 different products in each top brand that have Argan oil products including, shampoos, conditioners, serums and heat defense sprays. Please note, these are not Pure Argan oil products. They only contain a small percentage of Argan oil, and in the long term will not make a noticeable difference to the condition of your hair.
So…What are Victoria&K top tips for using Pure Argan oil in my hair?
Well you know best what type of hair you have, you may need to cater to what works best for you, but here are some recommendations to get you started.
1 – Pre wash Treatment
This method is best used for those with Dry/itchy/flaky scalp and people with greasy or severely damaged hair. Apply Victoria&K Pure Argan oil straight to the scalp and massage thoroughly, making sure that all the scalp and the roots are covered with oil. Once covered, brush the hair, spreading the oil completely throughout the hair to the tips. If preferred, you can wrap a towel around your hair to secure it but it is not necessary as the oil is completely natural and pure so it wont damage your clothes or be harmful to the skin. You can apply as much of the Pure Argan oil as you want or need to. Leave the oil to penetrate the hair and scalp for a minimum of 20 minutes or for as long as you want. Some leave it in the hair overnight. Wash your hair as normal, all the residue from the oil will wash away easily and will not stick to the hair, instead your hair will be unbelievably soft and the scalp nourished.
2 – Argan oil Conditioner
Suitable for all hair types You do not need to buy expensive Argan oil Shampoos or conditioners, simply add a drop of Pure Argan oil to the shampoo or conditioner that you normally use. First put a 50p size of shampoo or conditioner into the palm of one hand, add one drop of Pure Argan oil to the shampoo or conditioner, simply mix with your other finger. Then all you need to do is wash your hair as normal :)
3 – Heat Defense
Yes! You can apply Pure Argan oil to wet hair and use as a heat defense. This is a top tip if you are worried about using the oil on dry hair, and leaving the hair greasy – it wont, if you use the correct amount, but i know if you have never used an oil before it can be quite daunting and takes a few attempts to get used to. Suitable for all hair types – recommended for thin flyaway hair. Aply 1 or 2 drops of Victoria&K Pure Argan oil into the palm of your hand and rub together with the other hand. Lightly spread both hands through your hair – avoiding the roots but working with the natural length of the hair and tips. If there is any residue left on your hands – dont worry! Money saving tip – massage into another area of your body to moisturise, its all good for you! Dry/straighten/curl your hair as normal, leaving it look great.
4 – Anti – Frizz Serum
This method is best used for curly hair, dry hair, flyaway or frizzy hair After washing and drying, of course we all need something to tame those gorgeous locks. Pure Argan oil is great as a serum because it holds those flyaways down and accentuates those tight curls.
All you need is ONE drop of Pure Argan oil, rub together into your hands first, and using the palms of your hand hold the hair together working from the top to the ends. This is enough Argan oil to use for the whole head of hair. A little goes a long way….. If you are lucky to have natural curls in your hair you can add more Argan oil using one drop for each side. The oil will work with the curls and will give them more definition, locking in the frizz.
5 – Body Hair
Ok girls, cringe over. We all have body hair and what about those bearded men we like to kiss? No more itchy hair growing back and leaving you with a rash???
Yes!!Pure Argan oil is great to use as a post shave balm, treating the area with a quick massage of Pure Argan oil will help you from having that itchy grow back – great for sensative areas, just make sure you apply after every wash. The oil also works wonders for him, it doesn’t leave them with dry skin if they shave, and if they are super trendy to have an awesome beard, then it will keep the beard soft and subtle. You wont be able to keep your hands off him!
Well thats my top tips for using Victoria&K Pure Argan oil for your hair, i hope you find it both informative and useful. Remember to keep posted as i will be adding futute blogs for more top tips on Pure Argan oil for the skin and body.
